Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine has had his arm ripped off. But don’t worry, he’ll be okay.
A new season, a new story. FX’s academy award-winning hitAmerican Horror Story is back for a second season with a different look into horror.
While the last season focused on a murder house filled to the brim with ghosts, American Horror Story: Asylum brings a fresh story about a mental asylum in the 1960′s. New fans can jump right in this season without any prior knowledge of the first due to the anthology style of the show. Each season is a new story.
The premier started off with Adam Levine, playing a newlywed named Leo, getting his arm torn off in the abandoned Briarwood Mental Ward within the first five minutes. The opening credits roll as the viewers attempt to comprehend what they have just witnessed.
After the opening, the story begins in the year 1962 where Kit, a young gas station attendant portrayed by alumni Evan Peters, is threatened by a supernatural force. A bright light engulfs his home, his wife screams in the distance, and suddenly Kit is pinned to the ceiling struggling to break free. The force releases him, light becomes brighter, and Kit is no longer in his home, no longer alone. The audience only sees the barest hint of the antagonistic entity.
It’s aliens.
Asylum focuses on the dark secrets of Briarwood, its strange residents, and Jessica Langes’s sinister Sister Jude. Still present is the dark imagery and reference-laden storyline with a bit of science fiction added to the mix.
Anyone who watched the previous season knows how just straight-up bizarre the first episodes are, so if you find yourself a little put-off or confused, keep watching. As the season progresses, the storyline unfolds rather nicely and the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. There is a reason American Horror Story won academy awards.
Final words? The acting is wonderful from the returning cast and the newcomers, even if the Boston accents were slipping. Although the first episode is jarring, it’ll be worth the initial confusion as more episodes come out.
New episodes of American Horror Story: Asylum premier Wednesdays on FX at 10pm.
