Even if you don’t play video games and an Xbox sounds like a high-tech speaker to you, you’re probably aware that Modern Warfare 3 was released on November 8th. Maybe you saw the commercials on TV or heard about it on a talk show, or maybe it’s because it’s the biggest entertainment launch of all time. Not just games, either, but any form of entertainment. That includes TV, movies, and music. And yes, that means bigger than Avatar. We really shouldn’t surprised, though, seeing as the last two installments of Call of Duty both set the record for each of their launches. So the three biggest entertainment launches ever are Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops, and now Modern Warfare 3. Starting off on the only slightly insane side of launches, Modern Warfare 2 earned $310 million in one day. Black Ops, moving up the meter to pretty freaking insane, took in a hefty $360 million. And to finish the meter at should-be-sent-to-a-mental-institution insane is Modern Warfare 3 with $400 million in one day. Economists are estimating that Modern Warfare 3 sold 75 copies a second on the night of its release. So those five seconds you took to check your watch on the way to Gamestop? Infinity Ward already made $22,500 in that time.
