Some seniors went over the top with their promposals!
Prom is here, but before the dance you have to ask someone to go to the prom with you. The Mash gathered some unique promposals (prom proposals) that will make you go “Aaaw.”
Words with dates
Laurence Wagner, a senior at Walter Payton, wanted to make his prom date Aileena Gray feel like a star. So he devised an elaborate prom proposal with the help of both of their groups of friends. Wagner’s football teammates escorted Gray into the balcony of Payton’s atrium accompanied by cheers and music. Playing on the popular game “Words With Friends,” Gray looked down to see a Scrabble-like puzzle that read “Aileena, will you go to prom with me?” with Wagner holding the question mark. “Her friends were (holding) the letters,” Wagner said. “I had a huge amount of help that was all focused on trying to make a huge display for Aileena that would make her feel special. My hands were sweating and I was just praying the whole time that we wouldn’t screw up. But when she told me she liked it—that I made her feel really special—I knew we did it right somehow.”
She’s with the ban-ner
Their freshmen year, Karolina Ostapkiewicz and her boyfriend Seville Bekanon of Niles West made a promise to take turns asking each other to school dances. When it came time for prom, it was Ostapkiewicz’s turn to do something special. With the help of her soccer team, she unveiled a giant banner reading “Seville, PROM?” during their senior assembly. Ostapkiewicz’s proposal took a lot of advance planning. “From getting and cutting the sheets of paper, to sketching the whole thing by hand and then glittering and painting the whole thing, it took me a little over eight hours to finish,” she said. In the end, the hard work was worth it as Bekanon said yes while the entire room chanted for them to kiss.
Pop goes her heart
When Benito Juarez’s senior Nallely Silva was asked to get something from her boyfriend JoseAngel Manzo’s locker after school, she wasn’t expecting to find a beautiful rose taped to the locker door. When she opened it, Silva was even more shocked when four white balloons came tumbling out of the locker. One of her friends showed her how to pop the balloons with a pin, and with each pop came a burst of confetti. “I looked over and noticed that the last balloon had a note inside,” Silva said. “I popped the balloon and opened the note. Typed on it were the words, ‘Nallely, will you go to prom with me? Circle one: Yes, No.’ Then JoseAngel came up behind me and hugged me. I was speechless. I turned to kiss him and said, ‘I’ll think about it.’ Of course, I said yes later. It was the most amazing moment I have ever experienced.”
