the best and worst of television – teen to teen

As the school year comes to a close, we should all pay homage to the great television series that kept us entertained for the past year and hope for the mind-numbingly boring ones to get cancelled. Television broadcasters have definitely given us something to cheer about with popular break-out shows like The Walking Dead, The Voice, New Girl, 2 Broke Girls, and Revenge.

The Walking Dead, AMC’S television adaptation of a zombie comic book series, captivated millions of viewers every week. The series is based around a group of survivors in a zombie ridden world. Drama, death, bloodshed, and suspense ensues, creating an entertaining show that has recently pulled in 9 million viewers’ for the second season, making it the most-watched basic cable drama telecast in history. The Walking Dead is without a doubt the biggest hit this year.

The return of Two and a Half Men, with a reformatted plot line and new front man Ashton Kutcher, has given the show what some would say a positive spin. Now based around Walden Schmidt rather than Charlie Harper, has pulled in even more viewers for CBS. The comedy is, however in a way the same it’s been for the last eight seasons. New Girl on the other hand is a completely new comedy starring Zooey Deschannel, the hilarity of the sitcom is uncanny and refreshing. The show is based on the quirky and sometimes odd character Jess Day moving in with three guy roommates and the ridiculousness that surrounds them. w Girl definitely deserves to be dubbed “break-out comedy of the year.”

However, if situational comedy isn’t interesting the show with possibly the most puns and cliché funny humor is 2 Broke Girls. The show is centered around two waitresses attempting to make it big, and live above the poverty line at least.

The Voice is one of the highest rating shows this year and most successful. The reality show allows singers to debut their voices for artists Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, and Blake Shelton. Not only do the singers have amazing versatile voices, but the banter from the judges is amusing.

Revenge, an ABC Family original drama that aired early September, has great reception and an even better plot line. Based around getting Revenge, the drama captures the audience attention and leaves them wanting more. The show won a time slot against CSI: Criminal Scene Investigation, and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, which is unheard of for an ABC Family series.

Of course with success comes failure, Shows like Are You There Chelsea, Teenage Daughter Charlie’s Angels, and a few shows you’ve probably never heard of the shows have failed to draw in viewers, leaving it the farthest thing from success.

Are You There Chelsea, is probably the biggest disappointment yet, that with a comedian like Chelsea Handler, how could it not be funny and entertaining? Not to mention NBC made the show out to be a hilarious spectacle.

Smash has an all-star cast without the all-star ratings, the show is supposed to be the next big musical theatre show instead it resulted in a flop and will most likely be cancelled. Even though the show is worth watching it’s being completely overlooked by viewers.

Over the last year there have been many hits and misses. Not every show can be the next The Walking Dead but all and all the year has been entertaining.
